LOFALL — On Sept. 30, Red Cedar Farm was abuzz with activity.

There was the tractor to paint, animals to feed and the corn maze to finish. But the excitement of the approaching pumpkin patch season had everyone smiling.

“It’s like the Knott’s Berry Farm of the Northwest,” one employee said with a laugh.

Red Cedar is now open for tours through Oct. 31.

The farm in Lofall, one of only a couple pumpkin patches in the Poulsbo area, caters to groups of between about 15 and 45 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Owner Andrea Sampson said each season she has visits from groups ranging from preschool and kindergarten age, all the way up to teenagers. Reservations are already being taken and Sampson said she encourages anyone with interest to call soon.

“The time slots are already going fast,” she said.

Each group visit to the pumpkin patch includes a hay ride, popcorn and cider snack, craft and a pumpkin for each attendee. There is also time for kids to view the farm’s gardens and run through the popular corn maze.

“We’re very pleased with the corn maze this year,” Sampson said. “Last year, we had to build some hay structures because the corn didn’t grow very high but this year there are no short spots. It really turned out nice.”

Visitors also get a chance to get up close and personal with the variety of farm animals that call Red Cedar Farm home, including geese, goats, cows, chickens and rabbits. Sampson said she’s adding more of an educational aspect to the time in the barnyard.

“I think it’s important to teach the kids about the different animals and about life on a farm because I believe this is really the only opportunity some kids get to be on a farm,” she commented.

New this year to the farm’s lineup are two brahman holsteins Ginger and Lily, which Sampson said her family has fallen in love with because of their beautiful looks and quiet personalities. Nuzzling with the small cows, Sampson smiled.

“This is how they are all the time. They’re just mellow,” she said.

Also new this year, the Sampsons are adding one weekend when Red Cedar Farm will be open to the public. On Oct. 25 and 26, they will host a harvest celebration where anyone can come stroll around the grounds, see the animals and enjoy a pre-Halloween get together.

“We just figured we have the facility and we always wanted to add that Midwest pumpkin patch feel with the tractor and the corn field and everything,” Sampson said.

Red Cedar Farm is located at located at 27054 Lofall Road in Poulsbo. For more information, or to make a reservation, call (360) 697-7770.
