LEMOLO — Two teenage drivers racing along Lemolo Shore Drive Wednesday evening ended their joy ride sooner than expected.

Both drivers, headed eastbound in their respective vehicles, wound up colliding around 7:30 p.m. Oct. 6, one ending up in a front yard, the other knocking out a utility pole.

A light blue 1995 Ford Mustang convertible, driven by a 16-year-old Poulsbo girl, was following a white 1990 Mazda pick-up truck, driven by a 16-year-old Poulsbo boy.

The two teens apparently knew each other, according to the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office report, and witnesses stated the two drivers had been passing each other on the road prior to the collision.

According to the report, the driver of the Mustang attempted to pass the truck on a blind curve in a no-passing zone and apparently clipped the truck’s left rear quarter panel. Both drivers then lost control of their vehicles and skidded off the roadway.

The Mustang went through a chainlink fence at 17212 Lemolo Shore Drive and onto the front yard of the residence.

The truck struck a utility pole near the home and flipped onto its passenger side, knocking loose a transformer on the pole and pulling power lines down with it, causing a power outage for area residents.

A third driver, who was headed westbound on Lemolo Shore Drive, said both cars were in her lane of travel just before the collision occurred, nearly causing a three-car accident.

Traffic on Lemolo Shore Drive was shut down for about 90 minutes.

Fire officials said both drivers were wearing their seatbelts. The girl was transported to Harrison Memorial Hospital in Bremerton for head and neck pain. The truck driver declined a transport.

KSCO deputies said neither teen appeared to be driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotic substances, however, excessive speed was a definite factor in the cause of the accident.

The case will be forwarded to the Kitsap County Prosecutor’s Office for review and consideration of filing criminal charges against the two drivers for reckless driving.
