Promote a walkable community

Lend a hand to Kingston's trails

Public trail enthusiasts around town are looking for reinforcements. About 15 community volunteers are regularly involved in maintenance of established trails like the network on the Public Utilities District property between Ohio and Pennsylvania avenues.

At the June meeting of the Kingston Parks, Trails, and Open Space Committee, the group realized it was time to make a request on behalf of other Kingston trails projects that need a helping hand – or two or three pairs of them – and maybe some donated materials, too.

4th Avenue trail

The 4th Avenue trail is a county right-of-way that connects the Bay View Condominium complex with Ohio Avenue via a footpath. The trail needs five to 10 yards of gravel on the Ohio Avenue end and some strong backs to spread it. It would be good to build a small staircase along the mid-point, and donated materials and labor are also needed for that part of the project. Contact Evan Stoll at (360) 297-4489.

Kingston-Eglon trail

There’s a nicely-graveled parking area at the south end of the trail. The north end can be used as it is, but a word of caution: It tends to be very wet, so the committee is working with the Kitsap County Facilities, Parks and Recreation Department and the Washington Department of Natural Resources, which owns the property, for a solution. County resources are sometimes available to help with brush-whacking, but volunteer labor is also needed. Contact Carolina Veenstra at (360) 297-2059.

White Horse trail

Trail plans were completed but there’s not yet a timeline for trail construction. Several Indianola neighbors of the White Horse Golf Community development have consented to be considered for membership on an advisory committee that the developer agreed to form. Contact Bobbie Moore at (360) 297-2845.

Signing the trails

Volunteers are needed to help post Public Foot Path signs for all of the trails networks in town that were mentioned and pictured in the May issue of the Kingston Community News. Posts and vandal-proof screws were donated, so all that is needed now is labor. Contact Bobbie Moore at (360) 297-2845 to help.

Finally, if you don’t have enough meetings to go to, consider attending the Parks, Trails, and Open Space Committee meetings. The group is a subcommittee of the Kingston Citizens’ Advisory Council and composed entirely of volunteers who share an enthusiasm for these topics.

The group usually meets at 7 p.m. on the first Monday of every month, except when that conflicts with a holiday. Because of Independence Day, The July meeting takes place on the second Monday, at 7 p.m. July 9 downstairs in the Kingston Community Center. All are welcome!
