Prince, Vikings motivated by all-conference awards

POULSBO — Though Vikings quarterback Jared Prince was excited about winning the Narrows League MVP, he’s more excited about the possibilities next year brings for the football squad.

“It feels great to win it,” said Prince. “The Narrows League is a very good league, so to win MVP is pretty exciting.”

“I’m excited for next year,” he added. “Everyone’s got to do their job in the off-season.”

His teammates, many of whom were also honored by the league, echoed Prince’s sentiments.

“Even though our season didn’t go that well at the end, it’s nice to get some recognition,” said junior Jordan Henry, who took all-league, second team at wide-receiver. “But the bottom line is wait until next season and see what happens.”

One player who won’t be coming back is senior Bobby Thompson, who took all-league, first team for his play at the linebacker position.

“(The recognition) feels pretty good, it’s never happened to me before,” Thompson said.

Though the senior linebacker felt things could have been different for the Vikes toward the end, he said he felt good about the season.

“I feel like at the end of the season a lot of people lost track of what was at stake,” he said. “But you can’t go wrong with a 7-3 season.”

Thompson said he was also proud of his quarterback, and said Prince’s recognition is well deserved.

“He deserves everything he gets,” Thompson commented. “He’s one of hardest workers on team on and off the field.”

Junior Jeremiah Doehne who won all-conference, first team as a defensive back, said he was proud of his team’s all-around accomplishments.

“I think lot of teams they don’t have major player and I know that we’re the same thing,” Doehne said. “We have so many receivers and run the ball and catch the ball and (Prince) helped us out a lot by getting the ball to us.”

Junior Jacob Snell, who was honored as all-league, first team on offensive line, agreed this was an overall team effort.

“I didn’t care if I got any awards; I just wanted to do the best for the team,” Snell said. “But it boosted (my confidence) quite a bit.”

“We really wish we went to the playoffs this year,” Snell added. “But it was a real good experience.”

Also honored by the conference were juniors Andy Sturza (honorable mention at running back), Travis Tobin (honorable mention at wide receiver) and senior Nic Stearns took all-league, first team in the running-back division.
