Power outage in downtown Port Orchard

The power went out at 8:40 a.m. Thursday morning. Outages ranged from Bethel Avenue south of the Hi-Joy Bowling Alley, north through all of downtown to about the Port Orchard Yacht Club, said Jay Cookson, the city's public works supervisor.

Downtown Port Orchard was without electricity Thursday morning.

The power went out at 8:40 a.m. Thursday morning. Outages ranged from Bethel Avenue south of the Hi-Joy Bowling Alley, north through all of downtown to about the Port Orchard Yacht Club, said Jay Cookson, the city’s public works supervisor.

Heavy rain weighed down new spring growth on trees surrounding the power lines, causing them to fall and lean on the lines, Cookson said.

“The maples are growing so fast, they just lean on the wires and short out the fuse,” he said.

The power came back on at around 10 a.m. Thursday morning. Cookson hoped the power would remain on, and said a crew was headed to some problem spots to trim back some maple trees.
