POULSBO — The roaring discussion over the proposed Kitsap County NASCAR track will roll into Little Norway with some help from the Greater Poulsbo Chamber of Commerce early next month.

The chamber forum is slated for 6 p.m. June 5 at the North Kitsap High School auditorium and will last until about 8 p.m.

“We want to have a dialogue on the topic, so people can have a little better understanding of how it will affect them,” said Chamber Director Stuart Leidner.

Instead of limiting those who attend to listening to one side or the other, the majority of the forum will allow an interactive discussion between the audience and representatives from both sides of the issue, Leidner said.

“What we hope to do is carry on a dialogue about the pros and cons, so people have the opportunity to hear both,” Leidner said.

North Kitsap County Commissioner Chris Endresen said the event will provide a great opportunity to have both sides of the issue presented at the same time.

“I believe it’s the first time it’s been in the North End, and it’s a conversation that needs to take place,” Endresen said.

Representatives from the Checkered Flag Club and the Coalition for Healthy Economic Choices for Kitsap will each make 15-20 minute presentations on the topic, Leidner said.

Then the forum will transition into a question-and-answer period moderated by Chamber Board President Sean Flaherty. Audience members will be asked to write their questions on a form, which will be collected after the initial presentations.

The questions will then be sorted and placed into groups in order to prevent the duplication of questions and allow for as much discussion on the proposed track as possible, Leidner said.

“We obviously have a little different impact to be considered than the rest of the county, but it’s going to have an effect,” he said.

Traffic is an obvious impact as Poulsbo is situated between both the Kingston and Bainbridge Island ferry terminals and is dissected by State Route 305, he said.

There are other impacts that need be discussed as well, and the chamber hopes to bring those out during the forum, he said.

Unlike many other forums and discussions on the NASCAR issue, the chamber has focused its efforts on a factual dialogue without having elected officials as featured speakers, he said.

“We haven’t directly invited them, but they are all aware that we’re having the forum,” Leidner said.
