Port Orchard offering garbage pickup

Port Orchard residents can prepare to get rid of large-sized items during the first week in June thanks to a city-sponsored clean-up week.

Regular garbage pickups the week from June 9 to 14 can include items generally forbidden, including furniture and appliances among many other things.

Some items, such as bathtubs, certain furniture items or larger appliances will be picked up for a pre-paid fee.

Residents wanting to dispose of these items must pay the fee at City Hall ahead of time — up to one day before the regularly scheduled pickup.

The city will provide a tag to place on the item, which then must be placed out with the garbage by the road.

“If there’s no tag, they will not pick it up,” Public Works Clerk Brandy Rinearson said.

Public Works is not able to go on to private property, so all items must be placed curbside with the rest of the garbage.

The total volume of the garbage must fit into a space six feet by six feet by four feet in height.

A number of items are not allowed, including batteries, boats, car parts, construction debris, countertops, fluorescent lights, hazardous waste, motor cycles, oil cans, paint cans, tires and wood-burning stoves.

The program is open to residents of Port Orchard only.

For any questions, contact Rinearson at 876-4991.
