POULSBO — The tide’s going to be changing relatively fast at the Port of Poulsbo Commission when it comes to its recent vacancy.
And the state entity is now looking for community members interested in coming aboard.
At their Jan. 6 meeting, commissioners Tony DeCarlo and Glenn Gilbert laid out a method by which they will find a replacement for former commission president Mike Winters, who resigned his position in late December 2004. In an aggressive schedule, the remaining commissioners plan to take community applications and appoint the newest member at their Feb. 3 meeting.
The schedule to appoint the new commissioner is as follows:
• Community members may apply for the open seat with a resume and cover letter between now and 5 p.m. Jan. 21
• DeCarlo and Gilbert will meet in a special executive session at 1 p.m. Jan. 27 for the purpose of reviewing all applications and choosing finalists
• Finalists will be interviewed at a special executive session at 2 p.m. Feb. 1
• The final candidate will be appointed at the commission’s regular Feb. 3 meeting
Harbor Manager Ed Erhardt said candidates need to live within the Port of Poulsbo district boundaries and be 18 years old or older. Potential candidates should note that the Port of Poulsbo district boundaries are not the same as the City of Poulsbo’s boundaries.
Commissioners are responsible for attending one to two meetings per month, unless excused. There is no annual salary for Port of Poulsbo Commissioners, rather they are paid a small stipend for each meeting attended.
“People need to know this is not a full-time job,†Erhardt commented.
A resume and cover letter from applicants can be turned in to the Port of Poulsbo office during business hours weekdays. The port recently switched facilities and the port office is now located in the houseboat closest to the ramp on the port’s E Dock.
When asked what characteristics they will be looking for in the next port commissioner, Gilbert joked that he’d like to have someone who doesn’t like to fight.
“You know, someone who’s always right,†he said with a laugh.
DeCarlo, who was elected the new commission president Thursday night, said there aren’t any particular traits they’re looking for, however, applicants’ paperwork should be helpful.
“I’d like to see a basic summary of why they want to be a port commissioner,†DeCarlo said of the cover letter that should accompany resumes.
