POULSBO — It looks like Netflix is back on the menu down at the Port of Poulsbo with the impending arrival of new Wi-Fi infrastructure.

Port of Poulsbo Executive Director Brad Miller was recently given the OK from port commissioners to spend no more than $15,000 on a series of new Wi-Fi access points (AP’s) and other necessary peripheral accessories around the downtown Poulsbo Marina.

During a March 15 commissioners meeting at city hall, Miller had revised his plan to better fit within the $15,000 budget.

“I spoke with the tech about it to see if we could modify the plan to reduce the number of AP’s, and get the cost down a little bit so that everything will fit within the $15,000 cap,” Miller said. After reworking the plan, Miller said 14 AP’s would be enough to satisfy the needs of most visitors and residents of the port.

“Service should still be good, it won’t be as good as if we had 18 but it should still be pretty good. Certainly checking emails should be no problem, even surfing the web a bit, obviously if too many people get on streaming Netflix, that’s when things will start bogging down,” he explained.

The reason the port needs such a high number of access points is because the masts of sailboats moored in the marina tend to obstruct the signal as it is broadcast from the access points out to users, Miller said.

“This system will keep up pretty well, even after dropping the four [access points],” Miller added.
