Port Madison Bay closed to shellfish harvesting

Port Madison Bay remains closed to all shellfish harvesting.

SUQUAMISH — Port Madison Bay remains closed to all shellfish harvesting.

The Kitsap Public Health District and Washington State Department of Health closed the bay from Point Jefferson south to Point Monroe, and west to Agate Pass Bridge, Oct. 20. As of Oct. 22, the bay was still closed to harvesting.

Samples of mussels collected Oct 20 from the bay contained paralytic shellfish poisoning toxin concentrations of 88 micrograms per 100 grams of tissue, according to a press release from the health district.

Closures in Kitsap also include:

  • Dyes Inlet, closed to all shellfish harvestingVarnish and butter clam harvesting is closed from the west shoreline of Bainbridge Island from Agate Pass Bridge south to Point White, and on the east shoreline from Illahee State Park north to Point Bolin. All bays and inlets are included, except Liberty Bay
  • Varnish and butter clam harvesting also closed on the eastern shoreline of Kitsap, from Point No Point in Hansville, south to Restoration Point on Bainbridge. Including all bays and inlets
  • Varnish clam harvesting is closed at Rich Passage and Restoration Point south to the Pierce County line.
