Police hosts National Night Out on Aug. 2 here, in Silverdale

The 33rd annual National Night Out will take place around the country including events in Port Orchard and Silverdale.

Port Orchard Police will host the area’s participation in the annual National Night Out on Aug. 2.

In the city, National Night Out will run from 5:30-8:30 p.m. across from City Hall along the waterfront.

Representatives from the U.S. Navy, National Guard and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will be attending, along with South Kitsap Fire and Rescue. Kitsap Search and Rescue, All-Breed Canine Search and Rescue, Cencom and others also will be on-site.

The newly formed South Kitsap Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition has taken on a big part of bringing together a full program for the 2016 National Night Out, organizers said.

Local music group IGNITE will provide musical entertainment. Moondogs Too and Kitsap Bank will be providing free burgers, hot dogs and drinks.

Additional public parking will be provided by Kitsap Bank.

In Silverdale, Sheriff Gary Simpson has invited county residents to join him, sheriff’s office personnel and other public safety agencies for a National Night Out event from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Haselwood Family YMCA, 3909 NW Randall Way in Silverdale.

The evening includes static displays from fire and law enforcement agencies, informational material available from community resource groups along with attractions and games for children.

This year’s National Night Out is presented by the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office partnered with the Silverdale Target Store and the Haselwood Family YMCA. National Night Out is traditionally staged each year on the first Tuesday in August.

“We value National Night Out because it provides a forum for residents and communities to come together with a common purpose,” Simpson said.

“It stresses the importance of communicating with each other and with our public safety agencies, and of taking an interest in what is occurring in our respective neighborhoods.”

National Night Out is in its 33rd year of hosting events. The event is designed to:

Heighten crime-prevention awareness.

Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs.

Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships.

Send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and observant.

“While this one night is certainly not an answer to crime, drugs and violence, National Night Out represents the kind of spirit and determination to help make our communities a safer place year round,” Simpson said.

“The night celebrates safety and crime prevention successes; it works to expand and strengthen programs for the next 364 days.”
