The Port Orchard Chamber of Commerce named the 2008 South Kitsap Man and Woman of the Year, honoring Cruise-N-Car Wash owner Teri Goodwin and Fathoms o’Fun fixture Al Mahaney for their service to the local community.

“There are so many people who donate their time and effort that people never know about,” said Chamber Executive Director Coreen Haydock Johnson. “We wanted to reward them with some extra recognition.”

Goodwin and Mahaney were selected on Tuesday by a committee of 16 past honorees.

The award has been a tradition of the Port Orchard Chamber and the South Kitsap community since 1963, when Dr. Howard Minor was the first recipient.

In 1982, the award was expanded to include the other 52 percent of the population.

Goodwin, who has run Cruise-N Car Wash for about eight years, has used her business as a vehicle to help her community.

She has been involved in local fundraisers (car washes, predictably)and has assisted with projects to benefit schools and nutrition programs for women and children in a small town in Bolivia.

Mahaney, retired from the U.S. Navy, began volunteering for Fathoms in 1998. He joined the Fathoms board in 1999 and has been its president for the past six years.

He is a member of the Bay Street Merchants Association, supports and attends many chamber activities and events and serves on the Chamber’s Tourism committee.

Both honorees will be recognized at the Port Orchard Chamber’s Installation Banquet at 6 p.m. on Oct. 10 at McCormick Woods.

Additionally, the event will install new chamber board members and officers and also bestow the chamber’s first annual South Kitsap Small Business of the Year.

Four businesses have been nominated for this honor, with the winner to be announced at the banquet.

The Installation Banquet is also an important fundraiser for the Port Orchard Chamber.

Tickets are $64 each and include dinner, entertainment and drawings for valuable door prizes.

For information and reservations (requested by Oct. 6) call the Port Orchard Chamber (360) 876-3505 or go to www.portorchard.com.
