Picking up your part of the Earth

SUQUAMISH — If you think your street is in need of some spring cleaning, the Suquamish Garden Club is inviting residents to participate in a community-wide event that has had sparkling results in the past and hopes to have the same this year. “It’s gotten to be a really big event,” said resident Julia Smith, who has been helping coordinate the event, which is in its third year. “We clean up everything we can clean up.”

Volunteers are asked to meet at 9 a.m. at the Suquamish Community Congregational United Church of Christ on Division Street. Coffee and doughnuts will be provided by the Suquamish Tribe.

Aside from cleaning up the neighborhood roads, for the second year, the Suquamish Tribe will be providing $400 in vouchers to residents, such as senior citizens, who need help removing garbage from their property.

There will also be volunteers available with trucks to help haul garbage to the Hansville Transfer Station, Smith said.

Two years ago, more than 25 people came out to help, Smith said, adding that she’d like to see that kind of turnout again. Primarily, the smaller neighborhood streets will be cleaned, as busier streets, such as Totten Road, will be taken care of by the county’s jail inmates at another time.

It’s an important event because the community looks great the following day and it has helped develop a community-tribe relationship, she said. Smith would also eventually like to see some coordination with Indianola and Poulsbo for a more comprehensive cleanup day.

“It’s so nice to go out the next day and see it really clean and really nice,” she said. “I think it’s great. It’s a thing that’s worked really seamlessly with the tribe.”
