Flying fairies and dancing tin soldiers are coming to Bainbridge Island in the next few weeks, as the Theatre School presents two children’s classics, “Peter Pan” and “Babes in Toyland.”

“Babes in Toyland” will be presented Nov. 30 by the grade 1-4 students, while “Peter Pan” will be staged Dec. 1-3 by the grade 5-8 students. Both shows will be at The Playhouse on Bainbridge Island, directed by Karen Harp-Reed, BPA education director.

“Babes” features a cast of 25 youngsters in a journey through the world of Mother Goose as she and her goose Glenda rescue Tom the piper’s son from the bad guy, Barnaby, so that Tom can wed Mary Contrary.

Harp-Reed said this is the first theatrical experience for most of the younger actors, while the older ones are veterans of the stage. Many of the actors go on to the older age group, and full productions at BPA and other theaters.

“Peter Pan” will have some special effects, as Harp-Reed has adapted it for the age group and the stage at The Playhouse.

With her background in dance, Harp-Reed has added choreography, but subtracted any actual flying. Instead of Peter Pan, Tinkerbell and the Darling children whizzing overhead on wires, shadow puppets will be used to give the illusion of flight.

The production does include costumes for characters such as the crocodile and the sheepdog, and all the other characters are represented.

Tinkerbell, played by Eugie Price, wears a red costume, rather than the familiar Disney-green outfit.

Harp-Reed said in the original book Tinkerbell is described as being “a little red light,” which the red outfit captures.

The other fairies are dressed in different colors, creating a rainbow of fairies flitting across the stage.

“We had a wonderful time with ‘Peter Pan,’” Harp-Reed said. “Learning to do the dance numbers was interesting.”

Since it is a theater school, the young actors also learned how to work with masks and incorporate them into their characters.

“Peter Pan” features Price as Tinkerbell, Lauren Dietrich as Wendy and Annika Foster as Peter Pan.

“Babes in Toyland” plays for one show only, 5 p.m. Nov. 30 at The Playhouse, 200 Madison Ave., Bainbridge Island. Admission is free, donations to benefit the BPA Theatre School scholarship fund welcome.

“Peter Pan” showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Dec. 1 and 2 and 3 p.m. Dec. 3, at The Playhouse. Tickets are $12 adults, $9 seniors and students, available at The Playhouse box office, by phone at (206) 842-8569 or online at www.theplayhouse.org.
