Christmas arrived a little early to the Bremerton Patriot as Wesley Remmer was hired as the Patriot’s new sports/schools reporter on Monday.
Remmer, a Bainbridge Island native, travelled to Boulder, Colo. after graduating from high school to receive his undergraduate degree from the University of Colorado.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in English in May and after a six-week trip across Europe decided to embark on the pursuit of a job in the journalism field.
In his duties as the Patriot’s sports/schools reporter, Remmer will be handling everything from school board meetings to basketball games and everything in between.
Although Remmer’s first love is sports Patriot editor Charles Melton said he has faith that Remmer will excel on the schools beat as well.
“Wesley has great potential and enthusiasm, which are vital to success as a reporter,” Melton said. “He is a great addition to my staff.”
Remmer’s passion and drive to succeed were obvious during the hiring process and his desire to return to Kitsap County was a plus, Melton said.
“Wesley is a natural fit for the Patriot and I think our readers should expect great things from him in the coming weeks and months,” Melton said.
As the Patriot continues moving forward, Remmer will be counted on to play an instrumental role in that process, but Melton said he has no doubts that Remmer will rise to the challenge.
“It took awhile to find him, but I’m confident that Wesley has exactly what it takes to get the job done,” Melton said.
For his part Remmer said he is glad to join the Patriot staff and begin his journalism career.
“The Patriot interested me for a variety of reasons. First, I felt the paper would be a good fit for me,” Remmer said. “I enjoy flexibility and independence, and this job gives me both. Bremerton is undoubtedly a town on the rise and the opportunity to become part of this community excited me.”
With a natural love of talking with people in general and a strong desire to keep people informed about what’s happening in their local community, Remmer said becoming a journalist was a natural fit.
“My first week has been great. My co-workers have been warm, helpful and eager to show me the ropes,” he said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better start and, more importantly, such a wonderful community to join.”
As for what readers can expect from him in the future, Remmer said, “I want to give Patriot readers a young, vibrant voice through honest, meaningful writing. Beyond the factual evidence, I hope readers come away from my articles with insight into who I am as a person.”
