POULSBO — The schooner C.A. Thayer will set sail from the past onto Christmas trees throughout the North End, thanks to a partnership between the Poulsbo Historical Society and the Kiwanis Club of Greater Poulsbo.

The Thayer is featured on this year’s holiday ornament, which is being sold to raise money for the historical society.

The historic ship was used by Poulsbo’s Pacific Coast Codfish Company from 1925 to 1930 and served as an ammunition barge during World War II.

After the war, Captain J.E. Shields returned the Thayer to her previous duties, and she became the last sailing vessel engaged in commercial trade on the West Coast.

In 1984, she was designated as a National Historic Landmark and moored at the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park.

With the Thayer ornament, PHS members hope to continue what has proven to be a popular fund raiser.

“Our first year was very successful, and we still have some left over from last year,” said sale organizer Barb Mitchusson.

Last year’s ornament featured Grieg Hall, which was the Sons of Norway’s original home in downtown Poulsbo, Mitchusson said.

“The Thayer is an important part of Poulsbo’s past,” she said, adding that numerous locals sailed on the boat during its codfishing days.

Only 500 of the ornaments have been made. They cost $10 each and will be sold at First Lutheran Church’s Annual Holiday Bazaar Nov. 3-4, she said.

“They’re all numbered, and they are a limited edition collectible,” she said.

Even though the ornaments are small in stature, they are a way of keeping the city’s history alive, said PHS curator Erica Varga.

“Every year, people will look at it and see a different chapter of the area’s history,” Varga said.
