BREMERTON — Olympic College hosted a Men of Color Summit at their Bremerton campus Thursday, April 20.
The summit invited high school juniors and seniors from all over Kitsap and Mason counties of ethnic descent to visit the college “for a day of inspiration and exposure.”
Shawn Devine, director of communications at OC, said the summit is a way to demonstrate the college’s commitment to diversity, as well as to expose minorities to the college campus.
This is the second such event OC has hosted. The inaugural event was May 15, 2015, with more than 60 students participating.
At the time, Devine wrote that the students “spent the day learning about Olympic College and how higher education can have a positive and lasting impact on their lives.”
The summit began with a welcome presentation, followed by a campus tour and breakout session on Elements of Manhood, Building Brotherhood and Preparing for College.
“The day culminated with a graduation ceremony where Dr. (Damon) Bell (vice president for student achievement) presented students with empty folders that we hope will one day hold their college diplomas,” Devine wrote. “A $500 scholarship courtesy of the Olympic College Foundation was presented to Kail Santini of South Kitsap High School courtesy of the Olympic College Foundation.”
A story about this year’s event will run in the May 27 edition of the Bremerton Patriot.
