Not your ordinary neighborhood bar

POULSBO — No matter whether the Mariners, Seahawks or Sonics are lighting up the big screen or if rabid Dawgs or Cougs fans are looking for a place to catch the game, the Front Street Bar and Grill has everything a sports fan could want and then some.

“We ran a neighborhood sports bar down in California and are looking to do the same thing here,” explained bar owner Tom Binde as he took a break from his normal duties Thursday afternoon.

Before the bar opened in May, Binde said other than needing a fresh coat of paint and a few other minor fixes, the place was in good shape overall.

“We did a few little things before we opened, and we’re slowly working new things in like adding more video games and more touch-up things,” he said as he pointed to walls that are now adorned with various odds and ends of Seattle sports memorabilia.

Even before its May 5 opening, several people stopped by and asked when it would open because they missed having a sports bar in downtown, he said.

“A lot of people remembered what it was and so far we’re getting a lot of word-of-mouth business,” Binde explained. “We really tried to restore it to how it was.”

In addition to catering to the sports crowd, Binde said one of his basic philosophies is to be flexible enough to adjust to whatever crowd comes in on a particular night.

“We’ve got a DJ and if we have an older crowd, we’ll play some ‘80s music, but if it’s a younger crowd, we’ll play some Top-40 or something else,” he said.

That ability to easily adapt to different crowds is one of the unique advantages associated with owing a smaller bar and grill rather than a larger one, he explained.

Eventually, a ladies night is planned, but that, along with the addition of pull tabs, will be phased in gradually, he said.

In the meantime, the bar offers a menu of burgers and fries including fish and chips, he said.

“We offer the standard bar fare, but we’ve found that our fish and chips have become pretty popular,” he remarked.

Happy hour is 3-6:30 p.m. with $2 domestic beers and $2.50 well drinks. Specials are also planned during Seahawks games and could include a pitcher of beer and hot wings at a reduced price.

“We just want to be a place to stop by and grab a drink,” he remarked. “Your average neighborhood sports bar.”
