North Kitsap’s Jones vaults way to state

POULSBO — Jenne Jones is going to state ... again.

POULSBO — Jenne Jones is going to state … again.

Jones, the only North Kitsap High School gymnast to make the Washington State tournament last year — when she was a freshman — will make the trip to the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Center on Feb. 21 to compete against the state’s best.

She qualified in two events, the beam and the vault, at this weekend’s West Central District III tournament in Federal Way.

Jones qualified with a score of 8.45 on the beam and 8.45 on the vault.

She missed qualifying in floor by hundredths of a point.

For Jones, who is still recovering from torn knee tissue in her left knee, the trip will be a chance to shoot for the tournament’s finals on the second day.

“Last year, I was a little scared,” she said. “Last year, I was also injured. Now I know what to expect, and I’m going to train harder.”

Jones said the North Kitsap competitors were thrilled to be there, but also sad that it would be the final meet for the team’s four seniors.

“We’re going to miss them so much,” she said.

North Kitsap’s competitors included Jones, Caitlin Richards, Ashley Phillips, Katie Bale, Brianna White, Crystal Henderson, Kim Lyles, Toni Duchemin and Rachel Walters.

Head coach Kris Goodfellow said the team turned in a strong performance despite difficult competition during the 19-school meet, which boasted 106 competitors for each of the four events (beam, floor, bars and vault).

“The scoring was particularly tight,” Goodfellow said. “There were a lot of talented girls there.”

“It’s a hard district to be in. We usually end up at the bottom of the pile,” she added.

The top three teams were Federal Way (178.075), Sumner (176.425) and Auburn (175.65), while North Kitsap finished 15th with a team score of 144.65.

Bremerton’s Jessica Lindberg, who is the only competitor for Bremerton High School but trains with North Kitsap,

reached state in floor (where she finished fourth overall) and vault (eighth).

Her score was 9.25 in floor and 9.075 in vault.

Jones and Lindberg will compete in the individual portion of the state meet, beginning at 9:15 a.m. Feb. 21 in the Tacoma Dome’s Exhibition Center.
