Local groups gear up for growing season

Kingston Garden Club

The Kingston Garden Club meets at 9 a.m. monthly at the Redeemer United Methodist Church, on the corner of Parcell and Shorty Campbell roads. New members are welcome.

The special program at the April 18 meeting features container planting with the Potting Sisters, Karen Brown and Janice Adams. Kingston Garden Club members are busily preparing for their Spring Plant Sale 9 a.m.2 p.m. May 5 at the Kingston Community Center. Proceeds from the sale benefit community projects and fund the Aloha Wright Grant Program, which awards grants for educational assistance and special projects of community beautification and environmental improvements with long-term civic impact.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Garden Club

The Flotsam and Jetsam Garden Club has been meeting in Hansville since the early 1960s and has grown to 175 members. Members enjoy a guest speaker at monthly meetings and field trips.

The club meets again at 9 a.m. April 11 at the Hansville Community Center at Buck Lake Park. Holly Kennell, botanist, teacher, former WSU Extension agent and head of the King County Master Gardener Program, will give a talk, “Growing Salsa in Hansville.” The Flotsam and Jetsam Garden Club sale takes place May 12 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Hansville Community Center, just in time for Mother’s Day. The sale benefits annual scholarships to local students, provides for several needy families at Christmas and funds special area projects.

Indianola Garden Club

The Indianola Garden Club meets at 1 p.m. on the third Wednesday of the month and helps beautify Indianola. This summer, the club will provide landscaping and patios around the remodeled Indianola Clubhouse. The club also landscapes around the post office, dock and Indianola sign off Indianola Road. The 45-member club welcomes newcomers.

The Indianola Garden Club annual sale takes place 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, April 7 at the pavilion in conjunction with the Indianola Flea Market. This year’s sale features Epimediums grown from seeds out of Dan Hinckley’s garden, as well as unique bird houses made by members, and a raffle of a four-foot birdhouse topped by a butterfly house. Proceeds from the sale fund club projects.

The club’s April 18 meeting features a tour of the Bloedel Reserve.
