No-contact advisory issued for Dogfish Creek due to sewage spill

Public Works superintendent: Blockage was caused by construction debris from nearby development

POULSBO — Kitsap Public Health District released a no-contact advisory for Poulsbo’s Dogfish Creek April 20 following a sewage spill.

Officials said approximately 2,000 gallons of sewage has leaked from a manhole, affecting Dogfish Creek from Highway 305 to Liberty Bay, including all shoreline in Fish Park.

Mike Lund, Poulsbo’s Public Works superintendent, said in an email that a “clog occurred on the sewer line from Viking Avenue North toward the ball fields as well as all of the Olhava area.

“The clog was caused by construction debris from all the new development (hard to catch it all), flushable wipes and various unsavory items that get flushed down the sewer. This stuff gets hung up on the pipes and [causes] a blockage in the flow.”

Public Works staff, Lund said, were notified at 6:50 a.m. on April 20. By 8:30 a.m. crews the blockage had been cleared.

“Lucky for us, the Public Works crews were able to divert the flow to this manhole which drastically reduced the amount of the spill,” Lund added.

The public is advised to avoid contact with the water in the affected area, which means no swimming, wading or types of water recreation or play where water could be swallowed or get in the mouth, nose or eyes. Additionally, people should avoid skin contact if possible. Unintentional contact should be followed by immediate washing of the affected area with soap and water.
