Stokes will seek re-election to port commission
Port Commissioner Larry Stokes announced he will seek another term on the Port of Bremerton board. He has held the post since 2007.
Stokes, 74, represents District 2 which includes south Kitsap County and portions of Port Orchard.
Stokes, a U.S. Navy veteran, was first served as commissioner from 1979 to 1989.
His key priorities are to boost public outreach and increase occupancy in the Port’s marina and existing facilities to create new jobs and grow the revenue generated by Port businesses.
He said the Port needs to market the South Kitsap Industrial Area.
After retiring from the Navy, he founded Stokes Auction Inc. He retired from the business that is now owned and operated by his daughter.
State revokes license for assisted-living facility
The license for a Port Orchard assisted-living facility was revoked April 8 by state health officials after several violation were found during a March inspection.
According to an April 8 letter by the state Department of Social and Health Services, the inspection listed 18 violations against Sydney House, a 39-bed facility located at 155 W. Lippert Dr.
The inspection cited some employees didn’t have the required two-step tuberculosis testing, the company failed to disqualify employee after background check and failed to ensure background check on two employees.
The letter also stated Sydney House failed to:
• Report residents’ falls,
• Report missing resident to local law enforcement
• Ensure background checks on employees
• Ensure 15 employees had two-step tuberculosis testing
• Notify state of change in administrators
• Call 911 when request by resident
The facility is owned by Assist Living Concepts, Inc., in Milwaukee, Wisc. Sydney House opened in 1997.
County seeks road project ideas from public
Kitsap County is asking for road project ideas and suggestions to be included in the 6-year Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). Suggestions for this year’s TIP update are accepted through Friday, May 17.
Each year, Kitsap County Public Works completes a transportation project selection process. This year’s process determines which new roadway projects will be selected to be included in the 2014-2019 TIP.
Projects are scored and ranked using objective criteria. The criteria include safety and/or capacity needs, structural condition, environmental retrofits, and non-motorized needs. Projects are selected based on the availability and timing of funding, especially for state and federally funded programs.
The project selection process and TIP update happens only once each year. If you have a suggestion for a project, now is the time to speak up.

Register for the Seagull Wings Cook-off
Contestants hoping to win bragging rights for their wing recipes need to apply for this year’s sixth annual Seagull Wings Cook-off, which is part of the Kitsap Harbor Festival set for May 25-27.
In celebration of the Seagull Calling Festival’s 25th anniversary, the Port Orchard Chamber of Commerce will waived all entry fees for the wings cook-off, announced Chamber Executive Director Coreen Haydock.
Because space is limited and Haydock said registration forms for amateur and commercial entries, rules and procedures are available online at www.portorchard.com or by calling the Chamber at 360-876-3505.
The cook-off features hundreds of “seagull” wings created, grilled and served up by both amateur and commercial contestants hoping to win bragging rights for their wing recipes.
Judges will sample, deliberate and announce “Whose Wings Reign Supreme!” for first, second and third place in two categories — amateurs (home cooks and grillers) and commercial (restaurants, caterers and other commercial kitchens).
Wings will be distributed to the public for $1 for a wing donation and attendees can vote on the People’s Choice.
