Port honored for contributions

The Central Kitsap School District Board recognized the Port of Brownsville Nov. 10 for its recent donations to four local elementary schools.

Port Commissioner Bob Kalmback and Port Manager Jerry Rowland were on hand at the meeting, along with the principals from each of the four institutions.

The checks, which amounted to $1,145 each, went to Brownville, Cottonwood, Esquire Hills and Woodlands elementary schools. The checks were proceeds from the fifth annual Brownsville Appreciation Day, held Sept. 26.

Non-profit receives boost from Insurance company

Edgen, Hecker and Lemmon Insurance has raised $15,642 for the Kitsap Community Foundation.

The money came through the insurance company’s sponsorship of the 2009 Acorn Golf Classic at the Gold Mountain Golf Course, which also was cosponsored by the Suquamish Tribe and the Suqamish Foundation.

“We are very appreciative,” KCF Executive Director Pete Atha said.

WSP officer announces

retirement

A local Washington State Patrol officer completed his last day of work Nov. 13 after 26 years of service to the state of Washington.

Lt. Steven Smeland, who began working in 1983 as a cadet in Vancouver, has overseen detachments in Mason, Pacific, Wahkiakum and Grays Harbor counties during the past decade.

“Lieutenant Smeland’s retirement is bittersweet,” said Capt. Steve Sutton, District 8 Commander. “While I wish him success and happiness in his well earned retirement, his presence in the district will be sorely missed. His steady leadership and the respect he’s garnered not only from those under his command but our outside law enforcement partners throughout the district will not be easily replaced.”

Smeland, an Everett native, also worked in Bremerton, Everett and South Seattle.
