New ‘citations’ reward safe behavior | NKF&R | May

Join us on the opening day of the Kingston Farmers Market where we’ll be helping families to prepare for a safe summer by offering low-cost and custom-fit helmets and life jackets. We’ll also be selling raffle tickets for a top-of-the-line child safety seat. One of our dedicated volunteer car seat technicians won a drawing for the Orion seat and has generously donated it to NKF&R in support of the district’s safety programs.

Come and see us at the market in Mike Wallace Park on May 7 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Helmets and life jackets are always available by appointment at our fire station at 26642 Miller Bay Road NE.

We’re also partnering with the Port of Kingston, Kitsap Safe Kids Coalition, the Kingston Cove Yacht Club and others to install and maintain two life jacket loaner stations at the Kingston marina. The new sites, which should be stocked in early May, are in addition to the existing loaner station at Buck Lake Park. Watch our Facebook page for the exact date and time of the ribbon-cutting for the new sites, tentatively slated for Safe Boating Week (May 21–27).

This summer, when our firefighters see kids doing the safe thing, they’ll be armed with “citations” that will earn “suspects” a free child’s drink at Cup and Muffin.

Free child car seat checks will be offered at our Miller Bay Road station on May 14 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. First Aid CPR training will be held over two evenings — May 16 and 17 — 6-9:30 p.m. at the Miller Bay Road station.  Tuition is $40 and must be paid in advance to reserve a space.
