Naval Base Kitsap recently received the Secretary of the Navy’s award for pollution prevention in 2007.

The base garnered its second pollution prevention award in two years by reducing or eliminating pollution through increased efficiency in the use of raw materials, energy, water or other resources; protection of natural resources by conservation; reduction/elimination of the use of dangerous, toxic and hazardous materials; and recycling/reuse of materials.

The program was judged on management, technical merits, mission support, mission integration, mission sustainability and overall accomplishments. Naval Base Kitsap’s program showed great innovation and accomplishment in the reduction of more than 200 tons of waste, saving or avoiding $2 million in cost, according to a news release.

Naval Base Kitsap is now eligible to compete at the Secretary of Defense award level in pollution prevention.
