Mosquito Fleet Fest expands for Memorial Day weekend

The Mosquito Fleet Fest is returning to Port Orchard’s waterfront Memorial Day weekend, and this year, it’s doubling in size.

Following a successful debut in 2024, the Port Orchard Waterfront Alliance is expanding the event to two days, May 24–25, to celebrate the history and legacy of the Puget Sound’s famed Mosquito Fleet. The fleet, made up of hundreds of small steamers that once connected communities across the Sound, remains a significant part of Kitsap’s maritime heritage.

“We knew we wanted to make it two days but wanted to start smaller the first year, and it’s easier to get vendors for two days,” said Coreen Haydock, co-owner of Waterman Mitigation Partners.

The weekend will feature StorySailings aboard the historic Carlisle II, one of the last remaining Mosquito Fleet vessels still in operation. Local historian Josh Farley will narrate the sailings. Also open to the public will be tours of the Tarry Knot, a former Mosquito Fleet mail boat.

Although the Virginia V, a popular attraction last year, will not sail this time due to drydock maintenance, the festival will still offer plenty of nautical-themed fun, including over 20 vendors and food trucks, live entertainment, and historical exhibits.

Saturday’s highlights include performances by Western Washington Center for the Arts, featuring songs from The Pirates of Penzance, and a panel discussion on “Kitsap Ferries: Past, Present & Future,” moderated by Farley. The panel will take place behind Gathered by Josephine’s and includes regional leaders such as Kitsap Transit’s John Clauson and County Commissioner Katie Walters.

On Sunday, the South Kitsap Chamber of Commerce will host the beloved Seagull Calling Contest, a quirky community tradition that draws both kids and adults. A historic StoryWalk through downtown Port Orchard will follow, highlighting notable buildings and sites.

Children and families can also enjoy the Polaris Theatre’s Kid Zone, open both days, and participate in a Sailboat-on-a-Stick Scavenger Hunt running through May 25. The scavenger hunt features 30 participating businesses, QR-code-based history tidbits, and coloring sheets for kids available at the Port Orchard Library.
