Miss Kitsap hopefuls eye crowning moment

POULSBO — A trip to the Miss America pageant in Las Vegas could be in the future for one of the 11 contestants vying for the 2007 Miss Kitsap crown. The 2006 winner Kristen Edddings won the Miss Washington pageant and finished in the top 10 at the 2006 Miss America pageant, demonstrating anything is possible.

POULSBO — A trip to the Miss America pageant in Las Vegas could be in the future for one of the 11 contestants vying for the 2007 Miss Kitsap crown.

The 2006 winner Kristen Edddings won the Miss Washington pageant and finished in the top 10 at the 2006 Miss America pageant, demonstrating anything is possible.

Sheila Spiker, who assumed the Miss Kitsap reigns when Eddings became Miss Washington, will pass the title to this year’s winner at the Bremerton High School Performing Arts Center on March 24. The pageant begins at 6 p.m.

These young women will also be competing for their share of more than $25,000 in scholarship money from the Miss Poulsbo Organization.

The 2007 Miss Kitsap contestants are:

• Janice Barnett of Seabeck, 18, daughter of Ronald and Shauna Barnett, is a senior at Klahowya Secondary School with plans of owning her own salon.

Barnett will sing “L-O-V-E” by Natalie Cole for her talent. She has chosen “Drug Prevention and Awareness” as her platform.

She is sponsored by Richard C. Tizzano, Attorney at Law P.S.

• Kasia Alexander of Bremerton, 19, daughter of Mark and Jenifer Alexander, is a freshman at Olympic College with plans of becoming a school counselor.

For her talent, she will perform a comedic monologue, “The Audition”, and her platform is “Keeping the Arts in Schools.”

She is sponsored by Frank V. Peters, D.D.S. and Westsound Bank.

• Lauren Grummel of Bremerton, 19, daughter of James Grummel and Cherylann Reid, is a freshman at Olympic College working toward earning a degree in business.

Grummel will perform at hip-hop dance from the “Step Up” soundtrack as her talent. She has chosen “Mentoring Children” as her platform.

She is sponsored by Ross Michaels, Gary Lindsey and Talbot Excavating.

• Haylee Ellis of Bremerton, 19, daughter of Craig and Wendy Ellis, is a freshman at Olympic College with plans of becoming a dental assistant.

Ellis will play “The Hungarian Dance” by Johannes Brahms on piano for her talent. She has chosen “Abstinence Education” as her platform.

She is sponsored by the Bill Richardson of Edward Jones.

• Paige Emery of Silverdale, 18, daughter of Mick and Jane Emery, is a freshman at Olympic College with plans of becoming a second-grade teacher.

Emery will sing “Do You Wanna Dance” by Bette Midler for her talent. She has chosen “Suicide Awareness” as her platform.

She is sponsored by Chaffey Homes.

• Chelsea Marak of Silverdale, 19, daughter of Carla Marak, is a student at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas with plans of becoming a neonatologist at Children’s Hospital in Seattle.

For her talent, Marak will perform the “Carnival of Venice” by Giulio Briccialdi on flute. She has chosen “Children of Nations” as her platform.

She is sponsored by Tom Scherich Insurance Co. and Naumann Johnson Orthodontics.

• Abigail Hancock of Silverdale, 20, daughter of Jerry and Neila Hancock, is a sophomore at the University of Alaska-Anchorage with plans of becoming a pediatric nurse.

Hancock will play “Sonatina” by Friedrich Kuhlau on piano for her talent. She has chosen “Habitat for Humanity” as her platform.

She is sponsored by Seaport Salon and Day Spa.

• Whitney Channell of Silverdale, 18, daughter of Walter and Melody Channell, is a senior at Central Kitsap High School and has plans of becoming a ballroom dance instructor.

For her talent, Channell will sing “Fever” by Peggy Lee. She has chosen “Promoting Family Values” as her platform.

She is sponsored by Winslow Dental Group, Dream Dinners and Dr. Bruce Robinson.

• Emerald Armstrong of Port Orchard, 18, daughter of Edward and Cathy Armstrong, is a senior at South Kitsap High School and plans to play bassoon in a major symphony orchestra.

Armstrong will perform a bassoon solo, “Galliard Sonata,” for her talent. She has chosen “Elderly Awareness/Adopt-A-Grandparent” as her platform.

She is sponsored by South Kitsap Family Dentistry, Tony’s Pizza and Davis and Pruitte Roofing.

• Christina Browne of Silverdale, 17, daughter of Teresa Browne, is a senior at Olympic High School, planning to become a broadcast journalist.

Browne will sing “Reflection” from the movie “Mulan” for her talent. She has chosen “Poverty Awareness” as her platform.

She is sponsored by Home Appliance Contract Sales.

• Megan Hornbuckle of Bremerton, 23, daughter of Jim Hornbuckle and Denise Hughes, is a student at Olympic College with plans of earning a business degree from the University of Washington.

Hornbuckle will play Chopin’s “Waltz in e minor” on the piano for her talent. She has chosen “Habitat for Humanity” as her platform.

She is sponsored by Two Sisters Jewelry, Bremerton Tennis and Athletic Club and South Kitsap Family Dentistry.

Little Sisters awaiting star-filled night

POULSBO — When the new Miss Kitsap is crowned March 24 at the Bremerton High School Performing Arts Center, she won’t be alone as she begins a journey that will undoubtedly take her places far beyond her wildest dreams.

Her Little Sister will be her constant companion as she travels the state competing in pageants and promoting Kitsap County.
