Miller grows while handling Fathoms queen responsibilities

It’s been a year of attending community functions, festivals, parades and dressing up in fancy dresses for Fathoms Queen Devenn Miller.

But this weekend, the 18-year-old South Kitsap High School senior will end her year-long resign as Fathoms queen and crown her successor at the annual Fathoms o’ Fun Scholarship Pageant March 7 at Christian Life Center, 1780 Mitchell Ave.

“It has been really amazing,” Miller said. “We have done a lot of fun thing and I have learned a lot of things. It has been really a great experience.”

Miller said she learned about responsibility and public speaking.

“It has really changed me,” she said. “I would have never been able to stand up and tell anyone anything. And know I fell more confident in myself and in what I am saying. I could stand up in front of anyone.”

To her successor, Miller said, “ Have fun with it and represent the community well.

Last year, Miller’s pageant platform was the Holly Ridge Center because of her special needs brother, Cory.

Miller was a member of the high-school dance team. She performed a jazz dance to theme music from “The Pink Panther.”

As queen, Miller was awarded $1,500 in scholarship money.

Miller is the daughter of Joel and Kerry Miller.

After graduation, the 18-year-old Miller said she plans to attend Olympic College, then transfer to another school later — in a sunny climate.

“I’m going to be a child psychologist,” she said.

Miller said she would be open to coming back to judge a Fathoms pageant.

“I think it would be a lot of fun,” she added.

Also, Sami Newhouse and Soriany Sutman will end their reign as princesses, and Aaron Thomas will resign his ambassador title.
