Midweek market closed until middle of June

POULSBO — It’s not a lack of enthusiasm or support that closed the Wednesday Poulsbo Farmers Market, it was a lack of sunshine and an abundance of cooler than usual evening temperatures.

However, the closure is only temporary as organizers plan to bring it back better than ever in the middle of June in the Northwest Design Center parking lot at the corner of State Route 305 and Hostmark Street.

“We’ve really been battling with Mother Nature this year with as cold as it has been,” PFM marketing manager Jackie Aitchison said.

Even though there have been a couple of 60 degree days, the nighttime temperatures have plummeted to near freezing, which has had a dramatic effect on the growing season, Aitchison said.

“We don’t have enough produce available yet and we’re going to suspend the Wednesday market for a month and have a reopening about mid-June,” she said, adding that other midweek markets in the area don’t traditionally open until the middle of June because of the lack of available produce.

A large number of the farmers who will be at the market expect to have produce ready by that time, she said.

“We’re at the mercy of Mother Nature and they just don’t have it right now,” she said. “It’s hard for four or five non-produce vendors to make it a go.”

Once the Wednesday market reopens, its time will change from 12-4 p.m. to 2-6 p.m., she said.

“We heard from a lot of our customers that 12-4 p.m. just doesn’t work,” she said.

Last year’s midweek market ran from 3-7 p.m. before the decision was made to change the hours.

When the market reopens, Aitchison said it should blossom into a great venue with produce, artisans and craft vendors.

“Our baker will be back with us and we’ve got a great barbecue who will also be here in the middle of June,” she said.

Michael Trevors, whose meals-to-go were among the highlights of last year’s Wednesday market, will return as well, she said.

“Hopefully, we’ll be able to bring the whole complement when we reopen,” she said.
