Man sentenced to three months in jail, year in community custody | Case Updates

Case updates on stories reported in the North Kitsap Herald: Lance Nation Averett, Hector Francisco Saavedra Ruiz, and Spencer Merrill Williams.

Updates to cases reported previously by the Herald.

Lance Nation Averett, 44, of Kingston, was sentenced to three months in jail for unlawful imprisonment, and 364 days (with 274 days suspended) for fourth-degree assault with sexual motivation. He will also serve 12 months in community custody, and 24 months under supervised probation.

Averett was arrested in October 2013 and accused of kidnapping a hitchhiker and raping him with S&M devices in a Kingston basement. Averett was one of two men arrested and charged with the crime.

Averett initially pleaded not guilty, but instead made an Alford plea on March 31 to amended charges of unlawful imprisonment and fourth-degree assault with sexual motivation.

With an Alford plea, the defendant contends he or she is innocent, but that the evidence would likely lead to a guilty verdict beyond a reasonable doubt.

Hector Francisco Saavedra Ruiz, 21, of Kingston has pleaded not guilty to a charge of second-degree murder.

Saavedra Ruiz is accused of killing his infant daughter while allegedly high on meth. Doctors told Kitsap County sheriff’s deputies that the 4-month-old baby died of injuries associated with shaken baby syndrome. Other injuries, likely suffered before death, were also discovered during an autopsy, according to a sheriff’s report.

Saavedra Ruiz is expected to be in Kitsap Superior Court on Sept. 18. Trial is set to begin on Oct. 13.

Spencer Merrill Williams, 22, of Poulsbo has pleaded guilty to a charge of third degree assault of a law enforcement officer and possession of a controlled substance with the intent to deliver. He was sentenced to a total of 32 months in jail.
