Man rescued after kayak flips Sunday

A man floated in icy water for nearly 45 minutes Sunday after his kayak flipped over off Point Bolin in the Brownsville area.

Four Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue (CKFR) units responded to the 911 dispatch around 2:30 p.m. Two Bremerton men were paddling in the Brownsville area when one of the kayaks flipped as a result of gusty winds and a strong current. The men tried repeatedly to right the kayak before calling 911 on a cell phone.

Crews from CKFR launched a boat from the Brownsville Marina and firefighters located the kayaker about one mile offshore and three miles north of the marina just before 3 p.m.

After being retrieved from the water, the man was transported to Harrison Medical Center in stable condition.

A passing vessel, Snow Shadow, assisted CKFR in getting the second kayaker and both kayaks to shore. Both kayakers were wearing life jackets.
