Lured in by salmon derby

Kingston Cove Yacht Club derby a good catch.

The Kingston Cove Yacht Club Salmon Derby on Nov. 3 was one of the most successful yet with 115 entries and 23 fish caught. The increase in participants was probably due in part to the fairly mild weather that day, unlike past years when it’s been stormy out on Puget Sound.

(right) Haley Coultas, 11, of Kingston won the youth division for anglers 12 and under with her catch of a 3-pound 8-ounce blackmouth off President’s Point using herring for bait. She netted a $50 prize.

(above) First and second place in the salmon derby went to a father-son team from Hansville. First-place winner Jim Hopper, Sr. hooked the top prize of $700 with a 12-pound chum; Jim, Jr. came in second with a 10-pound 8-ounce chum and was awarded $450. The duo was fishing north of Appletree Point and offshore Eglon, using Green Flasher and Hoochy lures. Gary Edin and Don Knipe tied for third place with 9-pound blackmouth and each won $225.
