LGBTQ fundraiser is ‘dragging up the past’

BREMERTON — Olympic College is hosting a fundraising drag show to help fund a scholarship for the LGBTQ community.

Put on by the Marginalized Orientations, Gender and Intersex (MOGAI) and Allies club, the drag show will feature performances by professional and amateur drag queens and kings in an effort to raise money for their scholarship offered through the Olympic College Foundation.

Auditions will be held from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, and Thursday, May 26, at the Olympic College Theater.

Katrina Lund, vice president of MOGAI, will be overseeing the auditions, and said that it’s not necessary for performers to dress up for the audition, but to bring their music.

“Traditionally, drag is lip synch, so come with a two to five minute dance or lip synching routine,” Lund said. “We’ll accept as many (acts) as we can, so as long as they have a decent idea of how to perform or work the crowd, I think we’ll probably accept everyone who auditions.”

The show’s theme is “Dragging up the past,” and will feature songs from the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. Headlining are Ace of Spaces, a professional local drag king, and Gabrielle Grimaldi, a professional local drag queen. Also performing will be a few drag king acts from last year’s performance.

“We’ll have classic music, and there will be performances by the artists. There’ll be a contest throughout the night to pick your favorite,” Lund said. “We’ll have family friendly content. We’re doing everything we can to make sure it’s welcoming to all.”

She said the audience will be encouraged to tip the performers — all proceeds will go toward the scholarship — and that the performer with the most tips at the end of the night will be chosen as the crowd favorite and awarded a sash and crown.

“I think that most people have probably noticed that there’s a severe lack of resources for the LGBTQ population in this area,” Lund said. “We’re out here trying to improve visibility and help this population overcome some of the obstacles they face.”

Auditions are 4-6 p.m. May 24 and 26 at Olympic College. For more information about the audition process, contact Katrina Lund at 360-801-6368.

The show will be 7-10 p.m. June 25 at the Olympic College Bremer Center; doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for the show will be available starting June 1 at the Cashier’s Office at the Bremerton Olympic College campus, and will be $5 for students, $10 for community members and $15 for VIP tickets (which include refreshments and table seating). Refreshments will be available for purchase as well. For more information, visit bit.ly/1R8Nwgc.
