Leprechaun costumes optional

While pumpkin orange is a popular color this time of year, Kitsap Music Association chorale singers will be wearing green, as in “the wearin’ o’ the green,” in a manner of speaking. The group’s annual concert is “Songs of the Irish,” with a selection of familiar Irish ballads. Joel Skellie directs the Concert Chorale, and the Kitsap Chordsmen are the special guests for the evening. They will sing Irish songs in a barbershop a cappella harmony style, from “My Wild Irish Rose” to “Irish Blessing.”

The concert theme may seem more appropriate for St. Patrick’s Day than Halloween, but KMA business manager Lance Gilbert said they were all eager to put on this concert.

“We all like Irish music,” he said.

The group strives to bridge the gap between the classic choral repertoire and popular music.

“We did a lot of popular music last year,” Gilbert said. “We wanted to emphasis the classics this year while keeping a lighter tone. These arrangements are really beautiful. We’re having a terrific time with it.”

Songs on the program include “Irish Lullaby,” “Phil at the Fluter’s Ball,” “Molly Malone,” and yes, “Danny Boy.”

Bremerton singer Alena Menefee will appear as a guest soloist on “Irish Lullaby.”

The Kitsap Music Association was formed by Joel Skellie several years ago after he resigned his position as Chorale Director of the Bremerton Symphony Association. Many of the KMA members were previously in the symphony chorale. There are currently about 45 performing members in the group, with a mix of ages from seniors, young people and “middle of the roaders,” Gilbert said.

Members come from all over Kitsap County and as far away as Marysville in Snohomish County. Gilbert said they are always looking for new members and anyone who loves to sing is welcome to audition. Anyone interested in trying out for the group can e-mail info@kitsapmusic.org.

“Songs of the Irish” will be performed 7:30 p.m. Oct. 28 at Crossroads Neighborhood Church, 7555 Old Military Rd. NE, East Bremerton.

Tickets at the door are $10 adults, $8 seniors, military and student, $25 family of four or more.
