The Kurt Wagner Education Fund gave out more than $5,000 to South Kitsap School District teachers and programs on Nov. 23.

Seventeen teachers applied for grants and nine of them were funded. Grants range from $200-500 for a variety of grade levels and curriculum areas.

The recipients were: Lisa Wickens at Olalla Elementary, Sabrina Westermann at Manchester Elementary, Laura Kornelis and Mark Leshley at Burley Glenwood Elementary, Cheryl Marshall at Sidney Glen Elementary, Rebecca Sorter and Kristine Lange at East Port Orchard Elementary, Candace Barich at John Sedgwick Junior High and Marcia Coyne at the district office.

The Kurt Wagner Education Fund also gave $1,000 to support elementary visual and performing arts and $1,000 to support needy students with their South Kitsap High School athletic fees.

The funding organization will also be awarding $1,500 in student scholarships this spring.

This is the fourth year the Kurt Wagner Education fund has supported South Kitsap School District students, teachers and programs, school officials said.
