SEAHAWKS STADIUM — Last year, in her 13th season as head coach, Val Torrens led the Kitsap Varsity B lacrosse team to the State Championship title game against Bellevue. The Vikings eventually fell to the Wolverines 13-5 but the taste of success would be remembered.

Kitsap (13-0-1) ran away with the 2004 Varsity B State title game, held at Seahawks Stadium Saturday, beating the Bainbridge Island B team 17-6 for the win. The team opened the scoring at 20:48 and never looked back.

“We wanted to come out strong,” said coach Torrens, “and this was the game to give every ounce, where everyone had to dig deep and pull it out.”

The Vikings, who handled Bainbridge earlier in the season with 16-1 and 15-8 wins, rolled the crease and worked the restraining line with devastatingly effective results. Bria Phillips and Megan Lockert teamed up for a short-side goal at 19:38, and Krista Burleson hit Lockert from behind the net for a bounce shot to put Kitsap up 3-0. Bainbridge countered with an Emily Robinson score a minute later, but tallies by Burleson and a pair from Amanda Divyak would force a Spartan timeout. Phillips snapped up a ground ball and streaked downfield to find a waiting Lockert in the slot, upping the Kitsap advantage to six.

An unassisted — and unstoppable — goal by Katie Younger crashing the crease at 8:32 gave the Vikings an 8-2 lead in the first period.

A goal by Christina Garrigues was followed up by Robinson’s third point for Bainbridge with just seconds to play in the half.

Kitsap would start the second with its starting line-up, despite an 11-3 lead going into intermission.

“We knew from Bainbridge’s game with Curtis that they were very capable of coming from behind,” Torrens said. “In that game, (Bainbridge) overcame a large deficit to come back and win in the second half. That had to be respected.”

The second period began with Burleson drifting in from the left side for a goal, but Bainbridge’s Jane Baumgartner rolled around her defender to make the score 11-4 at 21:16.

Spartan netminder Frazier made a pair of remarkable saves, denying both Lockert and Burleson before a loose ball in the crease found its way past her on a Lockert scoop.

Lockert scored again at 14:33 before a Bainbridge timeout, and Burleson jammed one home to give the Vikes a 10-goal lead with 13 minutes to play in the tilt. A quick-stick redirect by Kristen Peterson from an over-the-net pass put the game at 15-4, and Phillips beat Frazier at 9:30 when the Bainbridge keeper came out to cut down the angle.

Phillips scored one more time for Kitsap two minutes later, and a late surge by the Spartans put another pair of goals on the board before time ran out, giving Kitsap their first state title.

“They’ve been our toughest competition all season long,” said Bainbridge coach Jan Hill. “They brought some new things to the table and it took us time to adjust.”

“It’s going to be great once it sinks in,” Torrens said after the win. “It’s sort of a bittersweet thing.”

“I guess it was our turn,” Torrens added. “We’ve been there before and they were always winning.”
