POULSBO — The Lady Viking JV bats have been fired up to start the season. They have driven in a total of 54 runs while their defense has allowed only four during the first four games of the season. That’s an average of 13.5 runs per game.

Forty-eight of those runs came in the first three games in which North pounded Port Townsend’s varsity squad and Bainbridge’s JV. Against Capital Monday, the purple offense wasn’t as lively, said head coach Nancy Williams, but the Lady Vikings still managed to come out on top, 6-1.

“These girls have a fire in them and have bonded as a team,” she said. “They are very supportive of each other and when one steps up to the plate, the others follow and get the job done.”

Sara Mathiesen and Amanda Chartrand are leading the charge at the plate as each were hitting an astounding .800 average going into Monday’s match-up. Jessica Gruber and Chelsea Brann are not far behind batting .583 and .538, respectively.

On the mound, Brann and Aubin Duncan have been leading the Lady Vikes. In the starting role, Brann has allowed a total of seven hits in the early stages of the season. Duncan has given up just two hits in seven innings pitched.

“When we played Port Townsend on Friday, the head coach accused us of using varsity pitchers to get the job done,” Williams said. “Aubin and Chelsea have never seen any time on the varsity squad.”

The Lady Vikings JV took on Port Townsend’s varsity team March 17 and exploded in the late innings to capture a 10-run-rule in the fifth inning with a score of 16-1.

Next up, the JV will travel to Olympia today with the first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

“This could be a great season for North’s JV program,” Williams said.
