Joint Land Use Study Community Open Houses Planned

Community encouraged to learn about and participate in a regional planning effort between local jurisdictions and U.S. Navy.

In 2013, Kitsap County received a grant from the Department of Defense, Office of Economic Adjustment to sponsor a regional Joint Land Use Study, or JLUS. These studies have been completed across the country to coordinate local community development with the activities of local military installations.

This Joint Land Use Study is a community-driven, cooperative planning process among Naval Base Kitsap, Naval Magazine Indian Island, and the surrounding Counties, Cities, Tribal Governments and the State. The primary goal is to promote compatibility between community development and the Navy’s testing and operational missions, while seeking ways to minimize the negative impacts of the Navy’s operations on adjacent communities and ecosystems.

Through a series of public meetings and workshops over the next year, the project partners (Kitsap County, Jefferson County, and the City of Bremerton) will solicit community ideas and feedback. The final product will include timely and relevant management recommendations for incorporation into the 2016 Comprehensive Plan updates for applicable communities.

The first public meetings have been scheduled for:

Kitsap County and City of Bremerton:

  • Monday, September 15th, 4-6 p.m. in the
Bremerton City Council Chambers (Norm Dicks Government Center, 345 6th Street, Bremerton)

Both meetings will begin with an open house, followed by a brief presentation to introduce the project, the process and goals.

Information will be provided about local military installations, existing conditions and community plans, as well as the emerging trends and issues driving the area’s future. Local and consultant staff will be on hand to answer questions and to document the community’s ideas and concerns.

For those unable to attend, surveys and project information will be available atwww.kiijlus.com. Sign up on the website to receive project updates by email and hear about opportunities to comment.
