The new donation drop site in South Kitsap for the Habitat Store is open on Sidney Road.

The new donation drop site in South Kitsap for the Habitat Store is open.

The group celebrated the first day open at its new site on Sidney Road. The property was donated by Wells Fargo, according to Don Nelson, store manager for Habitat for Humanity of Kitsap County.

The donation drop site will be run entirely by volunteers and will be open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

“We’re excited to have this new space available in Port Orchard,” said Nelson, “We had been looking for a donation site in South Kitsap for quite awhile, and the Sidney location is perfect for what we need.”

He said the community is encouraged to bring by any new or gently used building materials for donation. A full list of acceptable materials is posted at the donation site and online at www.kitsaphabitat.org.

The Habitat Store, formerly Builders Bargains, is located at 3451 Wheaton Way in East Bremerton. Since 2006, more than 3 million pounds of material have been diverted from the landfill.

Nelson said the store has new and used building materials donated by local businesses, contractors, individuals doing remodeling or others who need more shelf space.

“We sell the items at a discount rate,” Nelson added.

In addition, all profits from the Habitat Store go toward building new Habitat homes.

Nelson noted since the store opened in 2006, it has helped build 13 more Habitat homes in Kitsap County.

Habitat for Humanity builds decent and affordable housing in partnership with people who are living in poverty housing and who are unable to secure adequate housing by conventional means.
