Gridders rebound with a 35-20 win

TACOMA — It didn’t take long for the North Kitsap Vikings’ football team to get over its opening game loss to Bainbridge. The gridders rolled to a 35-20 win over the Wilson Rams (0-2) Friday night, maintaining their high-scoring offense but halving the points they allowed on defense in its second game of the season.

The change? Favoring zone coverage over man-to-man on pass defense, head coach Jerry Parrish said.

“The change worked out well,” Parrish said. “It’s a better fit for our kids — that was very obvious.”

The zone on the field gave the coaching staff time to look for holes in Wilson’s offense, Parrish added.

“They did a good job defending the pass to begin with and we found some weaknesses,” he said.

On offense, senior quarterback Jared Prince went eight-for-18 with 139 yards passing and two touchdowns. Senior runningback Andy Sturza had four carries and went 90 yards.

“He did a good job as far as being in control of his team,” Parrish said of Prince.

Next up for North Kitsap (1-1) — at Gig Harbor (2-0) Friday night. The two teams have been toted as the Narrows’ Bridge Division top two, making only the third game in the season a crucial battle for League supremacy.

“Gig Harbor will be really tough,” Parrish said. “So we’re going to have to do the best job we can.”
