POULSBO — The Breidablik Elementary gymnasium is no longer a gym, it’s a disco-bowling alley.

There’s a glittery poster that reads, “Groovy Disco Fever.” The lights are off, the Village People are belting out their uber-popular hit “YMCA,” and a disco ball splashes a plethora of rainbow squares around the room.

It’s disco bowling time, the culmination of Breidablik’s physical education bowling unit.

“They (students) see that we’re doing disco bowling and they just jump up and down,” said physical education teacher Bob Webb. “They like the lights and they just dance. There’s something about the disco beat.”

Webb dances with the students and said they all know the hand motions to “YMCA.”

He can’t get the lyrics out of his head.

Webb began the “Saturday Night Fever” theme unit about eight years ago because he thought it would be fun.

It was and is.

Animated laughter bounced off the walls of the disco gymnasium as the kids set up their lanes. There’s seven lanes in all and each has approximately three bowlers, a pin setter, a ball returner and a bowler.

Then the dancing and singing begins.

“We have a lot of fun doing this,” said second-grader Logan Cole. “Mr. Webb plays a lot of songs I already know.”

Some of the students even show up in costume. Webb said one student wore a sequined Halloween costume and another student showed up to class looking like a “disco hippy.”

The students are learning to bowl — and having a blast doing it — but even the most fun times come to an end. Friday marked the finale of the disco bowling lessons at Breidablik. It’s time for another set of students to bust out their best dance moves, as Vinland, Suquamish and Pearson Elementary schools also do bowling units. The equipment is shared between the schools.

“It’s about the kids,” Webb said. “They’re having fun.”

From the looks of it, the PE teachers are having a blast, too.
