George Briese awarded Outstanding Citizen honor

HANSVILLE — A quiet mover and shaker in the Hansville community was honored for his contributions to the neighborhood at a March 21 Greater Hansville Community Center board meeting. After wiring up what seems like half of Hansville and helping out at other events and gatherings, George Briese was given the Hansville Outstanding Citizen Award. “I’m very honored and extremely humbled to receive this recognition,” he said. “We’ve been here about seven years, and they have been wonderful.”

Briese served as a GHCC board trustee from 2001 to 2003, contributed to many electronic projects, including security systems for the community center and Hansville Grocery. He also sets up the PA system every year at the Hansville Rummage Sale, said previous GHCC president Lynn Hix, who honored Briese at the meeting.

“(Hansville resident) Bonnie Isaacs tells me that her introduction to George was during the rummage sale when he showed up in August ready to help and did just that,” she said. “He swept the floors, broke down boxes, did all the little ‘big’ jobs necessary to making the rummage sale a success. That was just the beginning.”

Briese has made quite an impression on the community, which earned him the award. He’s now working on planning improvements to the community center, and hopes to bring “Late Nite Catechism 2” to the area. The original “Late Nite Catechism,” which he helped organize at the Poulsbo auditorium in 2002, was a huge success, and residents have been asking for an encore since.

“This is an amazing community,” he said. “People from here and the surrounding areas seem to come out of the nowhere if you need help. I’ve never been in a community where you see this much support.”
