Gelder, Hansen, Rolfes unopposed; others face several challengers | 2016 Election

POULSBO — Candidate filing for the Nov. 8 general election closed May 20 — 120 candidates filed for 32 offices.

Rob Gelder is unopposed for the Kitsap County Board of Commissioners, representing North Kitsap. But there are four candidates for the County Commission from South Kitsap — the incumbent, Charlotte Garrido, Democrat; Dino Davis, Democrat, a Bremerton City Council member; active resident Roger Gay, Independent; and Republican Chris Tibbs, making his fourth bid for public office.

Tibbs ran unsuccessfully for North Kitsap School Board in 2001, the Kitsap Public Utility District board in 2006, and the County Commission from North Kitsap in 2011 and 2012. He served on the county Citizens Budget Committee and, more recently, as chairman of the county Republican Party.

The primary election is Aug. 2, the general election is Nov. 8.

In the 23rd Legislative District, state Sen. Christine Rolfes, D-Poulsbo, is unopposed for reelection. So is state Rep. Drew Hansen, D-Bainbridge Island.

But state Rep. Sherry V. Appleton, D-Poulsbo, will be on the ballot with Loretta Byrnes, Republican, of Poulsbo; Jack Carroll, Democrat, of Port Gamble; and April Ferguson, Republican, a member of the Suquamish Citizens Advisory Council.

Byrnes, who ran unsuccessfully for North Kitsap School Board in 2015, initially announced she would challenge Hansen, but filed as a candidate for Appleton’s position.

For 26th District state representative, position 1, the candidates are Republican Jesse L. Young of Gig Harbor, seeking reelection; former state Rep. Larry Seaquist, Independent Democrat, of Gig Harbor, who hopes to return to the Legislature; Alec Matias, Democrat, of Port Orchard; and Bill Scheidler, Republican, of Port Orchard.

For 26th District state representative, position 2, Michelle Caldier, Republican, of Port Orchard is seeking reelection. She is being challenged by Randy Spitzer, Independent Democrat, of Gig Harbor.

For 35th District state representative, position 1, Dan Griffey, Republican, of Allyn is seeking reelection. He is challenged by Irene Bowling, Independent Democrat, of Silverdale.

For 35th District state representative, position 2, Drew C. MacEwen, Republican, of Union is seeking reelection. He is challenged by Craig Patti, Independent Democrat, of Allyn.

Four North Kitsap residents are seeking election to Kitsap Public Utility District Board of Commissioners, position 1: incumbent John Armstrong of Hansville, Rusty Grable of Keyport, Denise M. Ledingham of Poulsbo, and Debra Lester of Bainbridge Island.

All Kitsap County Superior Court judges are running unopposed except for one: Jeffrey P. Bassett of Bremerton, who was appointed by Gov. Jay Inslee when Judge Jay Roof retired earlier this year, is being challenged by Dale A. Magneson of Silverdale.
