Garden sale and flea market hop into Indianola

INDIANOLA — Indianola residents and vendors are cleaning out their attics, basements and storage areas, looking for any items they might be willing to part with for a good cause — the ninth Annual Indianola Flea Market.

Ever popular, the draw of bargain prices, special finds and community togetherness are brought to the event each year, said organizer Carol Brown. The flea market will be held in conjunction with the Indianola Garden Club plant sale, which will be located in the Bud Merrill Pavilion.

“This year, the theme is bird houses,” Brown said of the plant sale. “The girls got together and made birdhouses throughout the year to sell. At the flea market, we’ll have beautiful antiques, handmade items, collectibles, basically something for everyone.”

“I’ve just about cleaned out my house trying to find things to sell,” said organizer Nancy Hale with a laugh. “There’s always something you can find, it’s just like your typical flea market.”

For those early risers who want a first glance at the goods, there’s an early bird special at 8 a.m. for $5. After an hour it will switch to $1 as the sale opens to all. This year, more than 25 vendors will be peddling their wares, Brown said.

“There will be antiques, which I suppose are the No. 1 big items, and collectable items,” said organizer Corrine Miller. “There will be lots of handwork, which is all really very special. It’s going to be a combination of many, many things.”

One table missing this year is the “men’s tools” section, she added. In years past, there were plenty of unidentifiable things from the vendor everyone had a laugh over, but “the guys” loved it, she added.

In an effort to give back to the community, a portion of the proceeds will help fund ongoing remodeling work at the Indianola Clubhouse. Other funds will assist youth groups, like Boy or Girl Scouts, in covering rental costs associate with meeting at the clubhouse, Brown said.

“I’m absolutely looking forward to this,” Miller said. “This is one of the first ones we’ve had this year because of the cold winter.”

“My favorite part is the people,” Brown said. “Everyone shows up and has such a good time. And the night before, the Boy Scouts set up the tables, and later that night, a group of young men, I’d say they’re about teenagers now, take the tables down for us. It truly is a community event.”
