Honors earned by students include summa cum laude for a cumulative grade point average of 3.9 or better, magna cum laude for a minimum cumulative gpa of 3.7 but less than 3.9 and cum laude for a minimum cumulative gpa of 3.5 but less than 3.7.
ACCEPTING PAGEANT APPLICATIONS
The Miss Poulsbo/Miss Kitsap/Miss Silverdale Scholarship Organization is now accepting applications for its 2010 pageant. All contestants must be between the ages of 17 and 24 and at least a senior in high school graduating in June 2010.
The phases of competition are talent, interview, evening wear, active wear, on-stage question and academic review.
The pageant will be Jan. 9, 2010 at Bremerton High School. Each contestant will receive a $500 scholarship for competing and the new Miss Poulsbo, Miss Kitsap and Miss Silverdale will each receive a larger scholarship in addition to other awards and gifts.

HELP A SENIOR
Home Instead Senior Care of Bremerton is sponsoring a community service project called “Be a Santa to a Senior.”
The purpose of the program is to positively impact the community by providing Christmas cheer to seniors who are least likely to receive a present during the Christmas season, many of whom are lonely, financially challenged or in a nursing home and may otherwise not enjoy the Christmas spirit.
Since 2005, Home Instead Senior Care has been providing home care services to local seniors. Staff help them maintain their independence by providing assistance with personal care, meal preparation, medication reminders, stand-by assistance if unable to walk safely on their own and help with errands and doctors appointments.

MCCHORD RESERVIST LEADS TEAM
Staff Sgt. Michael Bishop, of Bremerton, with the 446th Services Flight at McChord Air Force Base participated in an Air Expeditionary Force rotation to the Air Force Mortuary Affairs Operations Center at Dover Air Force Base in Deleware.
Bishop’s two rotations to AFMAOC had him there January to September in support of the contingencies in southwest Asia and the Horn of Africa.
For his second rotation, Bishop was handpicked as the leader of the AFMAOC Carry Team, their version of the base honor guard. He was responsible for choosing people to make up the rest of the team, team training, calling commands, work schedules and the fitness program.
“It was our mission to ensure the fallen troops returning home would be returned to their family in the most honorable way,” Bishop said. “To prepare the fallen U.S. troops with dignity, honor, and respect for their final resting place.”
Bishop received two Air Force Achievement Medals and coins from various military officials, totaling about 20 coins during his eight months at Dover Air Force Base.
OC MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM
Olympic College students may now begin the Manufacturing Technology Program in any quarter, including the fall.
The program has no prerequisites and can be completed in two quarters. OC worked with local manufacturers to develop the curriculum, so it incorporates the skills manufacturers want and need, such as basic manufacturing concepts, “Lean,” “Green” and “Just in Time” manufacturing, precision measurement, use of hand and machine tools, workplace safety, math skills, interpreting technical drawing, using technology in manufacturing settings and internships.
Students who successfully complete the coursework and required internship will receive a certificate of completion.
Classes are held in the late afternoon and evening at West Sound Technical Skills Center.

SEEKING VOLUNTEERS
Group Health is seeking hospice volunteers with weekday availability in Pierce, Kitsap and South King counties, particularly in Bremerton, Port Orchard, Gig Harbor, Tacoma and Federal Way.
Hospice volunteers stay with patients in their homes, assist with errands and practical tasks, and offer emotional support to terminally ill patients and their families.
The next training sessions will be held in Tacoma Oct. 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 and Nov. 5. Interested individuals are encouraged to submit an application before Wednesday, Sept. 30.
