SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

The Bremerton High School Pay It Forward Scholarship group recently announced Alma-May Magday as its newest scholarship recipient.

She is the daughter of John and Marlyn Howard of Bremerton and will graduate from Bremerton High School on June 12.

In the fall, Magday will attend Eastern Washington University where she plans to obtain a bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene. She will receive a total of $10,000 in scholarship funds to be paid out over the four years she is in college. In return, she will “pay it forward” by contributing a significant good deed or community service at least three times during her college years. The 2008 recipient, Kris Evron Matro, is currently studying pre-nursing at Olympic College in Bremerton.

Both recipients will help with the organization’s first annual fundraising event, Run It Forward, Bridge 2 Bridge, a run/walk family event scheduled for June 27. The 5K course will begin and end in Evergreen Park, going across both the Warren Avenue and Manette bridges.

The BHS Pay It Forward Scholarship targets low-income students with GPAs of 2.5 and higher who are among the first in their family to attend college.

REGISTRATION BEGINS

Bremerton Goodwill’s Job Training and Education Center, located at 4209 Wheaton Way, will begin registering people on May 11 for free classes in the eight-week session from May 26 to July 16.

The courses teach those with significant barriers to employment valuable skills to find and keep jobs. Classes fill up fast and sign-up is on a first come, first-served basis.

During this session, Bremerton Goodwill will continue a unique collaboration with AARP as a WorkSearch Certified Center. Workers 40 and older will be able to use AARP’s online WorkSearch Assessment System on Goodwill’s computers. This system identifies job choices for clients based on their interests, skills and experience. If clients have the necessary skills, AARP can connect them to job openings in the area. Instructors will be available at Goodwill to advise people on using the system on Mondays; call ahead for availability.

The following classes also are available: English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) — basic and literacy classes; Basic Computer Fundamentals — intended for those with little or no computer experience; Internet and e-mail — learn how to send and receive e-mail, open and view Web pages and search for jobs on the Internet; Customer Service — the basic skills of great customer service to prepare students for a variety of jobs; Goodwill Works and Career Building Lab — practice typing skills, create or update resume or conduct a job search; and National External Diploma Program (NEDP) — a program for mature, self-directed adults 21 and older to earn a high school diploma.

For class availability and enrollment information, call the center at (360) 373-3692.
