Jessica Matheson heard Red, the morning DJ for 107.7 mention a contest to bring The Foo Fighters to “your garage,” and decided to enter.

She didn’t think she’d win, though.

“I had completely forgotten about it, because I thought I wouldn’t win,” she said. “Then they called me up the first week of April.”

She had about three weeks to prepare a guest list of 50 people.

“No one believed me,” she said. “I had to write on all the e-mails: ‘This is not spam. It’s real.’”

“It took a lot of convincing, and there were some really skeptical people.”

Some only believed her when the Foo Fighter’s van pulled up in front of Al’s Garage, which her dad owns, and they chose for the concert site.

“They’re the most down-to-earth guys I’ve ever met,” she said. “They just kept thanking me for letting them play in my garage.”

The band rented Matheson’s motor home, where they spent time with the guests.

“They ordered a bunch of Spiro’s pizza, and they just kept going on and on about how good it was,” said Matheson.

Then, they asked what songs Jessica would like them to play.

“When they got there, they said, ‘We don’t even have a set list, tell me what you want to hear,’” she said. “They played every song I asked them to, plus more.”

They played a mix of their older songs, she said, as well as some from their newest CD, “Wasting Light.”

Matheson said that her favorite part of the concert was when Dave Grohl said: “This next song goes out to Jessica, because she’s probably your hero tonight.”

“I’ll probably never forget that,” she said. “I kind of felt like he was singing straight to me.”

Matheson can’t wait to see the band when they play at the Sasquatch music festival, Friday, May 27.

“Even if you don’t like their music,” she said, “once you hear about this, you cannot deny that they are a truly amazing band.”
