Fireworks and so much more

Kingston’s Grand Old Fourth of July celebration isn’t grand for nothing — after all, the event isn’t just about the fireworks that burst and boom over Apple Tree Cove every year. Certainly, Independence Day there just wouldn’t be the same without them and the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe is to be thanked profusely for personally making sure the 2006 show will go on. Even so, the event’s appeal goes far beyond the “rocket’s red glare.”

Certainly, Independence Day there just wouldn’t be the same without them and the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe is to be thanked profusely for personally making sure the 2006 show will go on. Even so, the event’s appeal goes far beyond the “rocket’s red glare.” Fireworks are a big piece of the event’s puzzle, but there are others that must also find their way into the overall picture.

Pieces that — if absent — would be noticed and missed by the thousands who attend. It is these elements that event organizers are now honing in on.

Sponsorships are needed to ensure next month’s event isn’t “just as good” as last year’s but even better. And that’s where the community and businesses should step in. Namely the latter.

Let’s face it, not many families can afford to drop $1,000 for a community celebration. Many businesses, on the other hand, can and many do.

We hate to say it, but Kingston can learn a thing or two from Poulsbo in this respect by getting title business sponsors for everything from J.P. Patches and musical acts to the sand castle demonstration and whatever else requires funds to make happen. The Third of July used to struggle every year, too. Now several local businesses, which get recognized as title sponsors, have stepped up to make sure it runs smoothly.

Kingston could do the same — it’s on the right track with the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe —and it would have less worries about fund-raising annually and more time to sit back, relax and enjoy the fabulous show.
