Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue firefighters quickly extinguished a fire that destroyed a 35-foot-long travel trailer parked on the property of a single family home on Wednesday.

The fire occurred in the 12000 block of NW Overland Trail around 2:47 p.m.

The homeowners were not home at the time of the fire but two teenage boys were in the yard of a residence behind the trailer and noticed the flames. The boys ran to a neighbor’s home and called 911.

When firefighters arrived the trailer was fully engulfed and there were power lines down on the property.

Heating safety tips:

As our weather continues to get colder, please remember these following safety tips when heating your home:

  • Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from heating equipment.

  • Have a three-foot “kid-free zone” around open fires and space heaters.

  • Never use your oven to heat your home.

  • Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional.

  • Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.

  • Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room.

  • Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from your home.

  • Test smoke alarms monthly.
