A Sept. 5 fire destroyed an abandoned house near the intersection of Woods Road and Mile Hill Drive.

Acting Battalion Chief Mike Kehl reported South Kitsap Fire and Rescue crews were dispatched to the fire about 11:30 p.m.

A neighbor called 911 and reported their had heard an explosion and saw flames.

Kehl said the caller reported a brush fire that was upgraded to a residential structure fire.

“When the first engine arrived on the scene we found a fully involved house fire with fire extending to the surrounding brush,” said Kehl.

He said firefighters extinguished the fire from outside the building.

“It took 20 minutes to extinguish the main body of fire, but crews remained on scene for several hours to confirm complete extinguishment,” Kehl said. “The building had been abandoned for many years and was a total loss due to the fire.”

Cause of the fire is under investigation by the Kitsap County Fire Marshal’s office.
